A native Dallasite, Herb is inspired to photograph and record sights in the place he calls home or encounters along the way to hunting excursions on the western side of the state. Like any Texan you might meet, he is proud of his Texas and Native American roots. That pride is apparent in many of his scenic or rustic images. Favorite subjects include still life, portraiture and landscapes. When he is not hard at work, one can usually find him watching Cowboy’s football, hunting, fishing or wood turning attractive pens in his garage. These are sold in an area gift shop or by contacting him here.

Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving.
What you have caught on film is captured forever... it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything. - Aaron Siskind

It might be said that Herb Bockemehl “inherited” his passion for photography. Like his father before him, Herb is a machinist by trade and grew to enjoy the same passion for photography. Largely self-taught, Herb occasionally takes classes to refine his skills and knowledge. While he is content to photograph portraits and create fine art images, he occasionally accepts commissions from local businesses that need group or head shots.
“I like to think my dad would be pleased that I’m still using some of the same equipment he used
in his portrait studio. Capturing a personality in a portrait or conveying how a subject makes me
feel is both enjoyable and fulfilling. While I mostly use a digital camera, every once in a while I use
real film because of the time-honored and traditional challenges involved with capturing the shot
in one take…and I love the look.”
